Whenever I purchase an expensive lens that I will be taking out in the field, the first accessory I buy is a Lens Coat cover for that lens. They protect the lens from dirt and knocks, and also camouflage them. I can then use the lens without worrying about rough handling. Lens Coat offer a superb service, and keep going back. I highly recommend this vendor.
